Correct Poor Toilet Rim Wash

Poor flush or rim wash may be caused by obstructed rim holes in the toilet. Follow these steps to rinse rim holes with a hard water deposit or lime dissolving cleaner.

1
Shut off the water supply to the toilet and flush it to get rid of most of the water.

2
Ream out the rim holes. Use a paper clip or a finishing nail to clean difficult obstructions in the rim holes.

3
Use wet paper towels to block the rim holes and plumber's putty to keep the towel in place.

4
Pour a hard water deposit or lime dissolving cleaner into the rim inlet in the flush valve and let it sit in the rim chamber for 8 - 24 hours to dissolve the deposits. It is recommended to lift the flapper or canister and pour the cleaner directly into the flush valve hole.

Likely causes:

  • During shipping, pieces of vitreous can shake loose and settle in the rim holes.

  • Hard water deposits can also restrict the water flow through the rim holes.
